Everyone is raised in a religion and is religious—even if that religion is secularism. McAleese may attend Catholic services, but she renders her ultimate loyalty to an individualistic secularism. She ultimately wants Catholicism to progress and conform to her actual religion’s principles. She, like most western leaders, wants a default agnosticism (i.e. the coward’s atheism) to be the default religion of the land. Parents raising their children in a different religion like Christianity is a problem.
But see it from a paedobaptist’s (baptism of infants) perspective: Baptism is an effectual sign of grace, and Christ tells us to forbid not our children from His embrace. Even credobaptists (baptism on the basis of Christian confession) raise their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord, whether their children consent to it or not. We also feed them, clothe them, shelter them, and make sure they get medical care. To refrain would be neglect—and have they not souls as well as bodies?
A worldview that would deny this is blinkered in its materialism. But it’s scary when leaders think this way. Would they try to ban infant baptisms for violating religious liberty and go to war against churches across the nation?
